World Class Research in Hessen

Deriving an antibiotic from a ladybug beetle and the discovery of a new chemical element: these are just two of the future-oriented research projects of which Hessen can be very proud. Dozens of universities and other research institutes are focused on meeting new challenges. Their devotion and excellence in innovative projects and future oriented research projects set new international standards.

A few are presented here:

Plasma Protects Environment

Air travel is becoming increasingly popular. In the first half of 2012, nearly one-half of Germany's population had already taken a trip by airplane. But air travel also impacts the environment. Researchers at the CSI (Center for Smart Interfaces) at the Technical University in Darmstadt are hoping to help reduce aircraft fuel consumption in the areas of resistance and circulation control. The researchers have discovered that fuel consumption is unnecessarily increased by the turbulence on wings of even the most modern aircraft. Their research is focussed on using certain plasmas to change the wing turbulence to create more lift. Aircraft with plasma wing surfaces can fly more slowly and therefore use less fuel.
