Tradition Meets Innovation

High-quality electrotechnical products from Hessen have a long tradition. In particular in the area of optical and photographic equipment, the state has been one of the leading suppliers of top quality products for more than 100 years.

The annual turnover in Hessen's electronics industry amounts to about 11 billion Euros. Around 51,000 employees work in 320 companies. One of the most important locations is Wetzlar in central Hessen with a broad opto-mechanics & electronics industry. TU Darmstadt is the university with the longest tradition worldwide for electronics, broad research spectrum and cooperation with companies. Important electro-technology companies in Hessen include Leica and Schunk.

Engineering industry

Numerous global players as well a range of small and medium-sized companies in the engineering sector are headquartered throughout all Hessian regions. Nearly 400 engineering companies manufacture and develop high quality products, making Hessen an extremely innovative business location with enormous growth potential. About 47,000 employees work in the engineering sector and generate an annual turnover of 10.5 billion euros. 

Leading mechanical engineering companies in Hessen include Kion, Viessmann and Pfeiffer Vacuum.
