Hessen – Germany´s most international economic region

Hessen assumes a central position in Germany and Europe, both geographically and economically.  Hessen's strong economy and high labor productivity, with a gross domestic product per person employed of around 75,700 Euros, makes it the leading German federal state. Among all federal German states, Hessen has achieved the highest gross domestic product for the past 25 years. GDP per employee is 16% higher than the German average.

Hessen’s economic heart beats in the Rhine-Main area, where over 70 percent of the gross value added is generated. The service sector constitutes the majority of this with over 75 percent. As a hub for transportation, a location for conventions, and a center for finance, Frankfurt is one of the top ten leading economic regions worldwide.

Hessen itself has strong regions: Central Hessen, a location with an innovative business and academic community, is characterized by a strong middle class, a productive handicraft sector and a pronounced scientific landscape. Northern Hessen, the center for logistics, flourishes with well-known enterprises such as Amazon, DHL, GLS and Rudolph Logistik and has the latest "cut-off times" in Germany.

The scope of companies in Hessen is very diverse. There are large multinational corporations, mid-sized companies, trades and crafts, as well as startups that all support and complement each other. Hessen is also home to more international company headquarters than any other state in Germany.

There are three industrial companies among the ten largest employers in Hessen: Adam Opel AG, Continental AG and Volkswagen AG. In Rüsselsheim, Opel operates the world’s largest car factory for its parent company General Motors. The German Railway AG and the Deutsche Post Group employ nearly 45,000 people in Hessen. In retail, with up to 29,000 employees, the REWE Group is also very strong in Hessen.

Finding qualified and motivated employees with a high level of training is usually not a problem in Hessen. Investments are safe and secure as a result of a high level of overall stability alongside legal security.

Hessen's pro-business climate has much to offer to a wide variety of industries and services:  proximity to leading research and technology centers, potential customers, suppliers, and Eastern European markets. No other business region can boast having more innovative or creative cooperation partners.
